My name is Sammy Mutembei, Founder and photographer at CreativelabAfrica.
April 14th 2016. I remember this day as though it was a minute ago. In my room at Ngara, I was searching about top photographers in Kenya. I stumbled upon a blog post by VersatilePhotographers of a photographer by the name David Macharia Mwangi.
I read his story and was super impressed on how he had scaled the ladder from the son of a peasant farmer to being President Obama’s official photographer during his visit to Kenya.
In the nick of time, I rushed to his offices at Hazina Towers,9th Floor and requested an appointment with him. I really wanted him to be my mentor in photography.
I found out about his school of photography and videography and I wanted to enroll, to enhance my skill in photography, and in business. I couldn’t afford paying the school fees so I mentioned it to him and I was so humbled when he announced to me that he would sponsor my education at Versatile School of Photography and Videography. I have to admit that that moment largely modelled my career in photography
Class at Versatile School of Photography and Videography was nothing short of knowledge and wisdom. Being taught by the best photographers in their various fields, the education I received was much more than what I have learnt on online platforms. At the time of my studies, I was also a student at the University of Nairobi, pursuing Actuarial Science. Since my photography class was always in the evening(5.30pm-7.30pm),it never interfered with my university classes.
What did I learn the most from my classes at Versatile School of Photography and Videography?
I am proud to say that I received years of experience from accomplished photographers, besides the skills that I acquired. I was offered practical lessons, not just theoretical information. Building networks with my lecturers and students is something that I am happy to be offered by Versatile School. Most important of all, is understanding the business of photography and the market trends, not only in Kenya, but also around the globe.
At the end of the course, we were expected to do a project before graduating. Clueless about the various service providers in the industry, Versatile School of Photography advised on the best service providers for each type of service I needed. I did my photography project and dubbed it ‘Ripped’. It is all about fitness photography.
It was a defining moment in my life when I was announced the best student from the Class of 2016.
I am proud to stand and say that Versatile School Of Photography and Videography, and especially Mr David Macharia Mwangi, have played a huge part in my photography journey, which has just began. I truly appreciate you.
Thanks to Alex Gabriel for believing in my talent and giving me an opportunity to practice photography and Muturi Kanini for being an invaluable lecturer.
